Beyond The Names Booklet

By Lesley Trotter

Every year the names on the war memorial in St Day are read aloud on

Remembrance Day, but personal knowledge of these men is now passing out of living memory.

As part of the St Day Town Clock and War Memorial Renovation Project

historian Dr Lesley Trotter has looked into the background of all the men listed on the memorial to reveal their touching, and sometimes surprising, stories.

From young miners who enlisted and served together to professional soldiers and sailors, and even an airline pilot, these men illustrate the wide range of backgrounds and wartime experiences among those commemorated within one community.
